5 HVAC Maintenance Tasks To Include On Your Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring is almost here – and we bet you’re beginning to make your spring cleaning to-do list! When you start taking note about things that need to be done around the house, make sure not to overlook your HVAC system. Here are 5 HVAC maintenance tasks you should include on your spring cleaning checklist this year.

1. Change Your Air Filter

When spring cleaning, don’t forget to change out your air filter if it’s been a while. You should plan to change your air filter every 1-3 months. A fresh, new filter will not only help improve your indoor air quality, but it will also help keep your AC system from having to work as hard as it would with a clogged filter.

2. Check Your Thermostat

The temperature that kept you comfortable in the fall and winter is likely not the temperature that will keep you comfortable in the spring and summer! Take time to look over your thermostat settings. Make sure it’s set to the right temperature for your cooling needs, and also ensure it’s set to “Auto” instead of “On.” This small step can save you big on those energy bills this summer.

3. Inspect Your Outdoor Unit

If you have an outdoor unit, make sure not to overlook it this spring! Make sure it has at least 2 feet of clearance from vegetation and other objects. Over fall and winter, leaves, debris, grass, dirt, and other things have likely accumulated around the unit – which can obstruct its airflow. To ensure optimal efficiency and peak performance, make sure your outdoor unit is clear.

4. Seal Up Your Doors and Windows

Air leaks can cause your energy costs to skyrocket, and your AC to work overtime. If you have any gaps in your doors or windows, you can bet that cool air from your AC unit is escaping – and that humid, hot air from outside is coming in. Seal up all air leaks in doors and windows using weather stripping or caulking.

5. Schedule Annual Maintenance

It’s recommended by most manufacturer’s that you maintain your HVAC unit annually. In fact, it’s a good idea to have your AC unit maintained in the early spring and your furnace maintained in the early fall. Regular, annual maintenance can extend the life of your HVAC system. A maintenance includes clearing away debris, cleaning vents, replacing your filters to keep your system running for years to come, and so much more.
