DIY KITCHEN AND BATHROOM PLUMBING MAINTENANCE

Preventative plumbing maintenance is essential for avoiding major repair and replacement costs.

In addition to scheduling annual plumbing maintenance by a professional plumber, it’s also important to know how to identify and repair small plumbing problems on your own.

Kitchen and Bathroom Plumbing Maintenance

Kitchens and bathrooms are the number one source for plumbing leaks and clogs. In order to keep your bath, shower, toilets, sinks and fixtures in the best condition, follow these plumbing maintenance tips:

Inspect your sinks and toilets for leaks.

According to the EPA, over 10% of homes in the United States have plumbing leaks that waste more than 90 gallons of water per day. The average household’s leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of wasted water every year, which adds up to about 1 trillion gallons of wasted water nationwide!

You can also check for water leaks buy inspecting your main water meter. Most water meters have leak detection dials that spin when there is a water leak somewhere in the plumbing system. If you don’t have a leak detection dial, write down the number on the water meter, don’t use ANY water for 30 minutes to an hour, and then go back to check the number on the water meter again. If the number has gone up, you have a water leak.

Contact your local plumber to repair any water leaks immediately. The experts at Bannister Plumbing will be able to quickly detect the source of your water leak and repair it onsite in no time at all.

Look for signs of water damage.

If you notice any water damage underneath your sinks, or water stains on your ceiling or walls, contact a plumber as soon as you can. Water damage can quickly develop mold and subsequent health problems will follow

Use your garbage disposal properly.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation and avoid throwing any inorganic materials, starchy vegetables, pits, bones, and large amounts of anything down the disposal unit.

Watch what you put down the drains.

Use drain catchers and other preventative methods to avoid clogged drains. Remove visible debris by hand or by using a drain snake. Avoid chemical cleaners; use natural ones instead.

Repair running toilets.

If you hear a toilet running, don’t ignore it. Most running toilet problems can be fixed easily by adjusting the chain or flapper. If you have a worn out flapper, you can find a cheap replacement at your local home improvement store.

Clean mineral and scale buildup.

Homes with hard water have to deal with lime scale and mineral buildup around their faucets and showerheads. A quick way to clean out your showerheads and restore water flow is to fill a bag with vinegar, submerge the showerhead into the liquid, and then tie it to the showerhead using a rubber band (string, or anything else).

There’s nothing quite like a brand new showerhead. Get a great shower experience every time by contacting us for high-quality showerheads, including low-flow models.

Pay attention to clogged toilets. If you have a lot of clogged toilets, that could be a warning sign that something is wrong—most likely, a problem with your main sewer line.
